The Kwara State Government has received 230,000 doses of vaccines under the World Bank assisted Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) to strengthen the fight against animal diseases and improve livestock productivity.

The vaccines which consist of 200,000 doses of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) vaccines and 30,000 doses of Newcastle Disease vaccines was received on behalf of the Kwara L-PRES Project Coordinator, Mr. Olusoji Oyawoye by the Project Animal Health Officer, Dr. Bukola Richards at the State Veterinary Clinic in Ilorin on Friday.

PPR is a highly contagious disease affecting sheep and goats, often resulting in severe illness, high mortality and considerable financial losses. Newcastle Disease on the other hand poses a similar threat to poultry production, with the potential to cause widespread deaths among birds and undermine the profitability of the businesses.

This intervention highlights the importance of preventive veterinary care in building a resilient livestock sector, particularly as animal diseases continue to pose challenges to production, trade and food security.
Through L-PRES, the Federal Government is pursuing interventions designed to strengthen livestock value chains, improve animal health management and enhance the capacity of livestock producers to withstand production-related shocks.
