L-PRES Project: KWSG Rallies Private Veterinarians to Strengthen Animal Healthcare Services

The Kwara State Government has again reiterated its commitment to supporting veterinary practices and other programmes geared towards improving productivity and commercialisation in the livestock sector of the state.

The State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, stated this on Wednesday during a meeting with consultants from the National Coordination Office of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Abuja, at the ministry headquarters in Ilorin.

While addressing the visitors, Mrs. Thomas, who was represented by the Director of Personnel, Finance and Supply of the ministry, Mr. AbdulRafiu Yusuf, said the state government, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, is sparing no effort in improving public health safety in the state with the renovation of the State Veterinary Clinic and Diagnostic Centre, and the ongoing state-wide vaccination exercise against anthrax and other Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs).
She also noted that the initiatives are improving and complementing the state government’s efforts at the sub-national level.

She further stated that the programme would present opportunities for unemployed youths, particularly veterinary practitioners in the state, and charged the consultants to ensure that the best among the veterinarians are selected for the exercise.

The Director of Veterinary Services of the ministry, Dr. Salman Abdullateef Olugbon, expressed appreciation to both the federal and state governments for their unwavering support towards the improvement of the state’s livestock sector.

Dr. Olugbon, who specifically pointed out the construction of the modern veterinary hospital through the World Bank-assisted L-PRES Project, said the gesture would help overcome some of the challenges and boost productivity in the sector.
In her remarks, the State Project Animal Health Officer, Dr. Bukola Richards, said the programme would strengthen animal health service delivery, reduce livestock morbidity and mortality, and help in responding to public health threats such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and zoonotic diseases, as contained in sub-component 1.3 of the Project Appraisal Document (PAD).

While speaking earlier, the L-PRES Project Consultant, Dr. Gani Enahoro, said the objective of their visit is to review the landscape of private veterinary practice in the state and identify qualified and capable private veterinary practitioners, as well as screen and select those who will work on the veterinary private practice micro-component of the animal health services of the L-PRES Project.
Dr. Enahoro also expressed satisfaction with the calibre of practitioners selected for the programme, adding that the remuneration for the programme would be performance-based.

The co-consultant of the programme, Professor Nafarnda Wesley Daniel, expressed optimism that the programme would boost livestock production and increase the economic gains of farmers by ensuring that veterinary services reach every nook and cranny of the state with a view to safeguarding animal health.
